Valorant is a free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed and published by Riot Games. The game was first announced under the codename Project A in October 2019. It was released for Microsoft Windows on June 2, 2020 after its closed beta launched on April 7, 2020.
Valorant is a team-based, first-person tactical shooter video game set in the near future, with players taking control of agents, characters who hail from a myriad of countries and cultures around the world. In the main game mode, players join either the attacking or defending team with each team having five players. Agents have unique abilities and use an economic system to purchase their skills and weapons.
The video game has a variety of weapons including pistols, submachine guns, shotguns, machine guns, assault rifles and sniper rifles. Each weapon has a recoil pattern that must be controlled by the player in order to fire accurately. The attacking team has a bomb, called a Spike, which they need to plant at a site. If the attacking team successfully shields the Spike and detonates, they score a point.
If the defending team successfully defuses the Spike, or the 100 second round timer expires, the defending team gets a point. If all members of a team are eliminated, the opposing team scores one point. After twelve rounds, the attacking team switches to the defending team and vice versa. The first team to win 13 rounds wins the game. Except for overtime, where you must win 2 wins/rounds in a row.
In total, there are five game modes: Normal, Competitive, Deathmatch, Spike Rush and Arms Race.
Valorant is being developed and published by Riot Games, which previously developed League of Legends. Development began in 2014, within its research and development division. Joe Ziegler, Director of the Valorant video game, is credited with creating the initial idea for Valorant by formulating what other video games Riot could develop when talking to other video game designers.
David Nottingham is the creative director of Valorant. Trevor Romleski, a former League of Legends designer, and Salvatore Garozzo, a former professional gamer and map designer for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, are game designers for Valorant. Moby Francke, a former Valve developer who has been an art and character designer for Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, is the art director for Valorant. The game uses the Unreal Engine.
Valorant was first unveiled under the working title Project A in October 2019. It was officially announced on March 1, 2020, with a gameplay video on YouTube called “The Round”. The closed beta version of the game launched on April 7, 2020 in the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia and Turkey. Valorant was released on June 2, 2020.
