Resident Evil 3 is a Japanese third-person shooter video game belonging to the survival horror genre, developed and published by Capcom, it is a remake of the 1999 video game of the same name and follows the characters of Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira trying to survive a zombie apocalypse in Raccoon City while being pursued by Nemesis, Umbrella’s new intelligent biological weapon. It was released on April 3, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows along with an online multiplayer mode called Resident Evil: Resistance.
The game received generally favorable reviews, highlighting its graphics, presentation and gameplay, although it received a mixed reception from gamers due to its short length, poor replayability and lack of important elements from the original video game.
The new version of Resident Evil 3 does not present gameplay with a view of static backgrounds with three-dimensional models, being that the new video game takes place in a third-person perspective with the camera over the shoulder very similar to the camera of Resident Evil 2 (2019 video game); the locations of the original video game have also been redesigned, partially altering several areas and adding new locations, using a similar but more detailed map system.
The herbal healing system and the original health status are also maintained, the resource management system in trunks is kept as well as most objects and resources, adjusted in an inventory system identical to the one already seen in Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 (2019 video game).
The new video game uses Capcom’s game engine, the Re Engine (Re Engine) originally used in the Resident Evil 7 video game, in addition to this the fighting mechanics were altered to include more melee combat elements, the behavior of the enemies has been updated, with the zombies being able to open doors and pass between different unsecured areas similar to Resident Evil 2 (2019 video game). Also, with the new game engine, enemy damage becomes cumulative and progressive, being visually affected by the player’s various hits and shots.
In mid-December 2019, it was announced that the new version of Resident Evil 3 would feature an all-new multiplayer game mode, enabling 2 or multiplayer gameplay.
Raccoon City is thrown into chaos by a zombie apocalypse caused by a T-virus outbreak. On September 28, 1998, former Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S.) member Jill Valentine is attacked in her apartment by an intelligent biological weapon known as Nemesis, which attempts to kill her and all remaining members of S.T.A.R.S4. While escaping the building, she encounters Brad Vickers, a helicopter pilot from S.T.A.R.S.’s Alpha team who suggests it’s time to escape the city, but during their escape, Brad ends up bitten by zombies while trying to save Jill.
After another encounter with Nemesis, she is saved by U.B.C.S. mercenary Carlos Oliveira. Carlos and his group of surviving mercenaries, platoon commander Mikhail Victor, computer expert Tyrell Patrick and ex-spetsnaz Nicholai Ginovaef, have taken shelter in a nearby subway station with the intention of using a train to evacuate several citizens they have rescued, but said train is unable to move forward due to debris in the tunnel and lack of electrical power. Jill offers to reactivate the power while Mikhail orders Carlos to clear the tunnel.
